What Is Panchakarma?

The Five Panchakarma Procedures We Perform

Vamana (Therapeutic Emesis)
Vamana targets Kapha-dominant conditions chronic bronchial asthma, sinusitis, recurring cold, psoriasis, and certain types of eczema. After 5 to 7 days of preparatory oleation and sudation, the patient ingests specific emetic herbs with large quantities of medicated liquid. The controlled vomiting that follows expels excess Kapha and associated toxins from the respiratory and upper gastrointestinal tract.
This isn’t something you’d undergo casually. Vamana requires continuous physician monitoring and is contraindicated in patients with cardiac conditions, during pregnancy, and in children below 12 years.

Virechana (Therapeutic Purgation)
Virechana addresses Pitta-dominant disorders chronic skin conditions, hyperacidity, liver congestion, high blood pressure, and depression. After the preparatory phase, an herbal laxative is administered to induce controlled purgation. The procedure typically spans 2 to 3 days and clears the gastrointestinal tract, sweat glands, and kidneys of Pitta-related toxins.
Patients often report clearer skin, reduced acidity, and improved mental clarity within the first week post-Virechana. The herbal laxatives used at our centre are free of synthetic compounds.

Vasti (Medicated Enema Therapy)
Vasti is considered the most important Panchakarma procedure Charaka Samhita calls it Ardha Chikitsa (half of all treatment). It corrects Vata-dominant disorders: chronic constipation, lower back pain, paralysis, arthritis, sciatica, ankylosing spondylitis, and neurological ailments.
Two types are administered at our Chandigarh ayurved & panchakarma centre:
Sneha Vasti uses medicated oils. It nourishes depleted tissues (Dhatus), restores immunity, and clears accumulated Malas from the colon. Before administration, the patient receives localized Abhyanga (oil massage) and steam therapy focused on the lower back and abdomen.
Niruha Vasti is a cleansing enema a precise combination of honey, rock salt, herbal paste, medicated oil, and herbal decoction. This formulation is adjusted for each patient’s constitution. It follows a Sneha Vasti course and is effective for gout, rheumatism, and flatulence.

Nasya (Nasal Administration)
The nasal passage is the direct route to the brain Ayurveda calls it Shirogata dwar (the gateway of the head). Nasya involves instilling medicated oils or herbal preparations through the nostrils after a preparatory facial massage and steam inhalation that opens the nasal channels.
It treats migraine, chronic sinusitis, allergies, cervical spondylosis, facial paralysis, insomnia, and anxiety. Patients with degenerative conditions of the brain and cervical spine see notable improvement when Nasya is combined with Shirodhara as part of a complete Panchakarma protocol.

Raktamokshana (Bloodletting Therapy)
Raktamokshana removes vitiated blood from the body using medicinal leeches (Jalaukavacharana), needles, or suction methods. It treats blood-borne toxicity, conditions where localized inflammation has become chronic — eczema, psoriasis, gout, varicose veins, and certain infections.
This procedure requires strict sterile protocols and trained therapists. At Shashvat Ayurveda, we perform Raktamokshana exclusively under physician supervision, using medicinal-grade leeches maintained in controlled conditions. Our Leech Therapy (Jaluka Treatment) program follows classical Ayurvedic guidelines for both safety and efficacy.
Why Each One Matters
Most clinics rush through Panchakarma. A proper course has three distinct stages – skip one and the outcome degrades.
Purvakarma (Preparation)

- Pachana Karma improves your digestive fire using specific herbs and controlled fasting. This step ensures your body can properly metabolize the medicated ghee given in the next phase.
- Snehana Karma involves ingesting increasing doses of medicated ghee over several days. The ghee enters the deep tissues and dissolves lipid-soluble toxins, drawing them back toward the digestive tract. (This is why Panchakarma in Chandigarh during winter months often yields better absorption the body's natural fat metabolism runs higher.)
- Swedana Karma is the steam phase. A full-body herbal steam bath opens the channels (Srotas), and the heat liquefies toxins further, accelerating their movement from the tissues into the gut for elimination.
Pradhan Karma (Main Procedure)
This is where the five core procedures occur. Based on your Nadi Pareeksha results and clinical assessment at our Chandigarh ayurved & panchakarma centre, Dr. Vikas Verma prescribes one or multiple procedures, sequenced and timed to your body’s response.
The duration varies: Vamana requires a single session after 5-7 days of preparation. Virechana takes 2-3 days. A complete Vasti protocol runs 8, 15, or 30 days (Yoga Vasti, Kala Vasti, or Karma Vasti respectively). Your physician adjusts the course in real time based on how your body responds.

Paschat Karma (Post-Treatment Rehabilitation)
This is where most patients and many centres make mistakes. After the main detox procedures, your digestive system is in a sensitive, reset state. Eating heavy food immediately undoes much of the benefit.
- Sansarjana Karma: a graduated diet protocol. You start with thin rice water (Peya), move to thick rice soup (Vilepi), then light Khichdi, before gradually returning to your regular diet over 3 to 7 days.
- Rasayana Therapy: rejuvenating herbal preparations prescribed after detox, when your cleaned tissues can absorb them at full potency. This step strengthens immunity and slows cellular aging.
- Shamana Chikitsa: pacification therapy with specific herbs and lifestyle modifications that extend the benefits of Panchakarma into your daily routine.

Who Should NOT Get Panchakarma Right Away?
Every Chandigarh ayurved & panchakarma centre should tell you this, but few do. Panchakarma is contraindicated in certain situations:
Pregnant women should avoid the main Panchakarma procedures. Children under 12 and elderly patients above 70 need modified protocols with reduced intensity. Patients with active fever, acute infections, extreme debility, or immediately after surgery must wait until their body stabilizes.
This is precisely why we begin every patient’s journey with a detailed Nadi Pareeksha Ayurvedic pulse diagnosis. Your physician can identify not just dosha imbalances, but also assess your current strength (Bala), digestive capacity (Agni), and tissue health (Dhatu Sara) before recommending any procedure.
Self-prescribing Panchakarma based on internet research is something we actively discourage.
What to Expect at Your First Visit
When you walk into our panchkarma centre in Chandigarh at SCO-326, Sector 40-D, here’s the sequence:
Day 1: Diagnosis. Dr. Vikas Verma or the consulting physician conducts a Nadi Pareeksha, evaluates your Prakruti, current Vikruti (dosha imbalance), and medical history. You’ll also discuss your diet, sleep patterns, stress levels, and specific health complaints. This consultation typically runs 45 to 60 minutes.
Days 2-7: Purvakarma. Based on your diagnosis, the preparation phase begins. You’ll receive oral medications, dietary instructions, and (depending on your protocol) daily Snehapana (internal oleation) and Abhyanga with steam therapy.
Days 7-14+: Pradhan Karma. The main detox procedures are administered. You’ll have daily therapy sessions lasting 60 to 90 minutes, with physician check-ins to adjust the protocol based on your progress.
Final Phase: Paschat Karma. Your graduated diet plan, Rasayana prescriptions, and lifestyle modifications are documented. We schedule follow-up consultations available through clinic visits, phone, or video call
Why Shashvat Ayurveda Is a Trusted Chandigarh Ayurved & Panchakarma Centre
Diagnosis before treatment, always. We don’t start therapies without a Nadi Pareeksha. Most centres skip this step and prescribe generic protocols. Our approach is the opposite: your constitution determines your treatment.
18 distinct Panchakarma therapies.
Beyond the five core procedures, we offer Abhyangam, Shirodhara, Pizhichil, Udvartana, Kati Basti, Greeva Basti, Netra Basti, and more. This allows us to build treatment protocols with a specificity that smaller centres can’t match.
Ashtang Ayurveda framework
Shashvat Ayurveda practices all eight branches of Ashtang Ayurveda Kaya Chikitsa, Bala Chikitsa, Graha Chikitsa, Urdhvaanga Chikitsa, Shalya Chikitsa, Visha Chikitsa, Jara Chikitsa, and Vrisha Chikitsa. When your Panchakarma reveals a deeper issue a hormonal imbalance, a fertility concern, a skin condition we address it within the same clinical ecosystem rather than referring you elsewhere.
Psychological counseling integration
Detoxification surfaces suppressed emotions. Patients sometimes experience emotional releases during Vamana or Vasti. Our on-site Satvavajaya Chikitsa (Ayurvedic psychological counseling) support means you’re cared for mentally, not just physically.
Open 7 days a week.
Panchakarma doesn’t pause for weekends. Our Chandigarh ayurved & panchakarma centre operates Monday through Sunday, 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Treatment continuity is non-negotiable for outcomes.
